Who ever thought of following a diet to lose weight? They look brilliant, appearing on the cover of popular magazines as a "magic solution" to lose five, seven or more pounds in a matter of weeks! However, as tempting as they may seem, they can also be dangerous.

Each diet encourages a certain action: it may be only the consumption of liquid (the liquid diet), or consume food according to a points table (diet points) or a famous experimental menu that probably arose at a university (the Diet USP).
